I am captivated by the degree of detail in work that is so small. In gouache no less. I, too, want to know about the edges. Masking tape?

Sorry guys I should have noted, I did photoshop a couple of edges
but for the most part I used a 1" flat Aquarelle watercolor brush for blocking.

Hi Mike, how do you prioritize your edges?

Do you make a difference of edges where dark and light meets? And when the values are relatively close, like in the main group of buildings, do you make the edges softer? Or just as hard to differentiate 1 bld from the next?

Thanks!

I guess I don't think too much about it when i'm painting, it's more spontaneous if anything... but I will try to lose some edging if I feel that the painting needs to breathe a little or if I need to balance some contrast either toward or away from my focalpoint.. especially where two different colors or values are too intense or opposite each other when they meet... I also find that most of by broad lay-in strokes tend to be softer and then get somewhat sharper as I work up to my final shapes..but not as a general rule.
